Media....hmm.....

Ha here am finally trying to type in something after months......I now have realised how fun life is working 24*7....minus the work I guess the brain really does not work a bit and so no thoughts and no blogs too!!!Through our lives (at least our genertion) has been really acquainted with the media like no other generation.Maybe the next generation will feel more of its effects. We grew with media maybe they will grow in the media.Thats how things are these days with everything from who sneezed and who slept 20 hours are making the news!!!!!!!!!!!!

Being pushed to watch the TV for the past 3 months , I have watched a hundred reality shows(where half the show is staged!!), a thousand stupid serials(all with the same story..watch 2 min of the show and you can be the script writer for the next 2000 episodes!!),a lakh interviews, a million news updates.Am in awe about the number of news items that gets telecasted in a news channel everyday. If one has missed all interviews, tv serials and reality shows..you just need not worry...switch on a news channel and the entertainment, glitz and glamour and reality there makes upto a million other tv channels!!!I really mean it.

There was a time when we really had , just the half or one hour news programs, then we had a few hours and now we have news channels in every language each running their string of stories! Am still thinking of why there are stories of me yawning and you laughing making it to the news and all the only answer I can get to is...they are running a 24 hours channel and unlike a news paper they need to be bribing the viewer with something or the other..So everything typically makes news!!!

I have been watching too many of these channels...tamil, hindi and english(guess should try out other languages also...guess it would be my free language course!!). News these days have been more of being tentative...there was a time when we saw just what happened and today i see what might happen, what might have happened behind scenes and what not. This day I have been seeing about this news exclusive about Sachin contemplating retirement on one channel, him not retiring in the other and what not!If Sachin is going to retire he will make a statement ,wont he???Why is everyone contemplating everything??We don't even know if that thought has crossed his mind, but everyones discussing of will he or wont he!!!!!!!We have so many of this might happen the first hour and this did not happen in the next hour!!!

All these keep happening but there are definitely those shows that really do convey what really is happening. We would have never known about all kidnappings and earthquakes and bomb blasts had it not been for these channels.Am happy atleast to see that we get to see the "real news" and also the fashion week at the same place.Atleast these news channels have become a place for everyone.Just tune in and get whatever you want.News, song, reviews, interviews, discussions, you name it and you have the perfect show dedicated for each of these.

Reality shows!!!!The trump card that every channel has these days!An indian idol, voice of india,sa re ga ma pa, super singer all have their own singing sensations, then there are the jodi no. 1's, nach baliye's and jhalak dikhlaja's all producing some dancers!!!!Some glitz, some glamour a pretty good no. of participants , some stage management, two non stop blah blah hosts, 3 judges and ya we have got one reality show. The only plus with all these shows, people we never knew became our acquaintances!!!Actually with some reality shows the prize money is so very catchy that it could actually set up the life for the winner!!!

All these said, what have I been doing all these days????Thank God I have got all these shows that would keep my brain from getting rusted. These shows after all save me from boredom and above all it has helped me write this blog!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Advertisements

Its holidays and with no big work to do am pushed to watching TV!!And man i must thank everyone who was inolved in building TV, the dish and cable and everything. Each day i see so many programs, and i know everyone switches over a channel when there's a break!I do that too..But still no one can ignore those numerous Advertisements!!!

An ad might be shown for may be a few seconds or a minute, that is more of a irritation when we are seeing those interesting programs, but still what goes into making an ad, how well it has been able to influence our taste, and how important are they to every company. In fact i do remember some ad's that we have waited to watch(those cadbury dairymilk ad's, i just love them).

Some years back,1996 to be precise, i remember this ad by Pepsi(i think am right). When every other product claiming to be the official world cup thing, they came up with this ad, which simply said "just kill ur thirst, there is nothing official about it".And i learnt that this "unofficial" did wonders for the company. There are so many advertisements that have been a real influence in everyone's taste!

Who can miss those numerous billboard ads that we see everyday during our travel around the citi. I know many who used to turn around once they arrive at a signal, to simply look at the Rahul Dravid bill board! For hat matter, there have been loads of controversies about some billboards too.

In recent times there have been breakthrough's in advertisements and marketing with mobile ads and ads on the net coming into play.

Marketing has been very instrumental in increasing the revenue of the company or even creating awareness about certain news .Who can forget that "pulliraja" ad? It did make us talk for quite a while! How else would one sell a movie???Some movies, even if it has nothing bundled in it, had done well just because the way it was marketed.Marketing films has been so instrumental that it takes us to the theatres. These days a film that is not marketed well or even a product that has not been marketed well, definitely loses ground.

Its not that advertisements are big money spinners for their companies but they themselves are big money spinners. How else does a newspaper or radio or a channel make money.Ads are the main means of revenue for all our media! We hardly know that a minute ad during a prime time TV serial or a block buster movie or our cricket matches could cost lakhs!!Yes an ad, that hardly is shown for a minute costs lakhs(and remember, half the time we switch channels when we see an ad!!). Paying the channels, paying the cricketers, film stars, models and the ad crew and still an ad is able to bring about the big difference to a company. The whole look of a product(be it a movie,an awareness program or some commercial item) changes, the way it actually is marketed.

At the end of the day, marketing and advertisements are important and instrumental...and am definitely not going to forget any of those Raymond, dairy milk and titan ads , they definitely did create an impact!!!

DOCTORS!!! An incarnation of GOD?

As ever this blog too is inspired by one of those TV programs...Sitting home with nothing much but studying to do am more often pushed to watching TV.And today I was watching Believe it or not! A medical miracle. At least teh program was a lot better than one of those saas-bahu serials!

The story goes like this, this guy from Africa(i think) has had a bone deformity, that is so rare that the disease does not even have a name!!!The problem, the deformity has forced him to walk on four legs, just like an animal!!!!Such a rare case...Many of his neighborhood doctors gave up and he was left stranded for long with this deformity. But then he finally finds one who dares to give it a try. Surgeries, that would either leave him in a wheel chair forever or if successful could make him walk like anyone of us!!!An experimental surgery that could go either way!The doctor succeeds and this guy walks like us!He speaks of his dreams to study and be a teacher. It was brave on part of the guy to have lived with such deformities and keep trying to get it right when almost everyone gave up on him....and what to say about the DOC???????He has now set things right for a man.....made him dream, made him stop worrying about his deformity and live life the fullest.

More often, we have spoken of Doctors demanding huge fees and infact even accused them of being heartless many a time!!!But there is always the other side of the coin! How many of us have spoken about these people who could have saved many lifes, who have bought many lives into the world , and those who have made these miraculous achievements...that simply leaves us spell bound.

Often we have criticised doctors for being heartless, accusing them of seeing the patient more as just a 'case' than a human. But each day they see so many whining, so many suffering from pain and still to be continuing in the same job for years...they are not heartless but they have just learnt to not show the pain out!!!And Doctors have families too...many of us would have vent out feelings in our workplace or colleges once we have had a small fight in the family!!But for a doctor..to vent such an emotion could cost a life and who could have realized this more than a Doctor. All I could simply think after watching the story was...Miracles do happen and Doctor's demonstrate it more often than anyone.

Adieu BRIAN CHARLES LARA

Am writing this post with a heavy heart, after all am going to miss the high backlift, the force the bat comes down and the way the ball races through to the boundary and most of all those match saving innings!!!!!I know there are so many out there who dono who am talking about...but for me Brian Lara has been almost demi god!!!I have followed him, worshipped him, loved him....all for the true cricketing genius that he has been!!A modern Giant...I dono if am allowed to be writing about my fanaticism for this guy in a joint blog....bt i cant help that..i just wanted to...and i convey my apologies to my blog mates too!!!!!!!

Anyone looking for reasons i like Brian???????just 2 innings and and hat adds upto 876(375&501). For quite a while(during the start of his career) he had been a playboy...Success came too early and so did fame and he struggled to handle that well...A maiden century being a 277 against one of the best teams in the world(AUSTRALIA)...who would not get carried away...Months passed...days moved...bt he was breaking those records and who would not have got spoilt? He was cricket's first international superstar, his fame surpassing the seas, the kind of adulation that, normally, only Indian cricketers enjoy!!This happened at precisely the age when Lara was most susceptible and least equipped to handle its negative aspects. There is no pressure on you to remain a nice guy when beautiful women line up and try to jump the queue - to go home with you just because you are Brian Chraless LARA. We rubbished him...he whined in fact said he wanted to walk out of cricket, but yet came back strongly to what he loves most...Cricket.

This is the reason y he is my favourite even ahead of Sachin, Steve, Rahul, Walsh...Inspite of his super human batting abilities he was frail..None of these men had the very foundation of themselves shaken away!!!But Brian came back and rebuilt!!!

Captaincy came his way...he failed, went and came back strong. For all the majesty of his performances in the middle, Lara's greatest battles were fought within himself. Failed many a time but rose like a phoenix!!!!!!!!!!!To me he won over his dark side and came into light!!!!Gone was the arrogant young man...and came the mature responsible cricketer, did all this without the help of his bat!

Players from all around the world have hailed him!!Who would not???Losing a record that was on his name for 10 yrs...and came back and re written the same record to his name within a year..at the age of 34 when most would have sat back enjoying the game!He bats like GOD, but struggles like us to get rid of the flawed mortal tag!!!And thats y Brian u are my favourite Sports person....

The last of the West Indian Titans!!!The memoir of the lost west Indian legacy!!!A true hero who unlike the modern day's gr8 players..has played for a team that had lost its pride and sheen...A career that spanned his country's downswing in cricket but still been able to win matches...produce those beautiful innings....No wonder every cricketer envies his game and that amazing heart....As he goes into twilight, i think all will agree that he has entertained like none other!!!!A legend!!!

As pple say, "A LEGACY CAN COME TO AND END, NOT DIE". Hoping to c a beautiful SWAN SONG on saturday...Go Brian Go....U will be remembered as one of the greatest players to have played cricket...a true diamond in the crown called cricket....I wish u shine one last time................

F.R.I.E.N .D.S

Remember the day we first met??Not knowing each other...not wanting to know..not even a smile!!Then we started with a blank smile then started with a "nenga solunga" which eventually changed to "sollu" and which 2day is "dei sollu da"!!V have shared days, hours and seconds. We built castles with our thoughts, moved mountains with our dreams..2day i wanna tell u how much u mean to me hand in hand we will move the immobile...Long live our frenship!!

This is one of my favorite forwards that has been doing the rounds for quite sometime. How true!! V all start strangers and some end up being real close who u would never want to lose and some even after being acquaintance for years..still remain acquaintance!!!How weird !!!What makes u get close to some alone????

I have always been part of a gang right through my school and college days. And when there are gangs there r gang wars too...not the real war kind but cold war types!!! And everyday v have had our share of teasing, mauling, insults and what not…We are a gang , v pull each others legs but when one of us have a prob the first to come forward to help u are the ones who have been torturing u all ur life!!!
It is more of an unwritten rule too .In the gang v can tease each other but someone out of the gang does that and everyone is 2gether ready to pounce on someone.

The best part about being frens is, v have our own share of misunderstanding, v fight badly but still in a day or two v understand each other bury our differences ,get back together and it all starts all over again. How nice a feeling it is to have some on your side ..no matter what u are going through, someone who would be happy for u and someone who would just pull u back when u are going to make a mistake!!! There are very who few would understand when their fren stops them from doing something wrong…v would have never realized that v were to do a blunder and v were being stopped from doing that …We fight asking them do mind their own business and finally when v r in a fix v realize of how sensible some one had been in trying to stop u!!!V realize but there are hardly any who would care to ask an apology!!! But a sorry among frens??? that’s not right too! Thanks and sorry have no place among frens!!!

As the lines go
Some moments can be shared
Some feelings cannot be explained
Some words cannot be described
But nothing can be hidden
from a True friend!!!!

Even your unsaid apology would have reached them by now!!! That’s friendship!!!

the film called DOR

This was one Nagesh Kukunoor movie i was so desperate to watch and what a movie it turned out to be!!! A portrait in fact. I have always been a movie buff(though i dont c every x,y and z movie in the theatre!!) , y in fact almost everyone is. Each week v c atleast ten movies in different languages releasing at one of those multiplexes in your city. Some go on to become a blockbuster and some just fade away, but there are very few films that could make your heart twinge. This is one such movie that does not make one twinge with pain...but makes one think that there always is light at the end of the tunnel!!!!

Guess this is a remake of a malayalam movie but the original is supposed to have been more heart wrenching. This movie is the story of two women, a muslim women from himachal and another a traditional Rajasthani gal (the two women Gul Panag as the muslim women and Ayesha Takia as the Rajasthani gal were just too good). Their husbands share a room and work together in Saudi when the Rajasthani guy is supposed to have been killed by his room mate. He is sentenced to death as is the Saudi custom of an eye for an eye, the only way he could be pardoned a "mafinama" or a letter of pardoning from the widow. The muslim women starts in search of the widow to get the letter and on her way in the deserts she gets help from a "behrupiya" (someone like a nomad, brilliantly portrayed by Sreyas Talpade!!). The story is all about this women who fights all odds to get her husband out of jail and the widow who is literally confined to the four walls of the fortress!!!

It sounds like a very intense movie doesn't it???But you got to see this movie to know of how such an intense movie could be told with humor in it.This is such an intense film but you find the two women and the behrupiya guy dance to "Kajra re" in the middle of the desert.Seems misplaced right????But that is just not the case!!!!!!As the protaganist sets on travel from the mountains of himachal to the deserts of Rajasthan you simply feel like u are travelling with her.The other thing i liked about this film is the song called "Yeh Honsla" ,this is one song that could just pep you up when you are in the worst of moods.

The best however in the movie was the way the two women are portrayed. We have always heard that muslim women are often confined to the four walls and the Hindu women to be more outgoing...This is just not the case here. The protaganist is the muslim women !!

Every Nagesh movie has been better than the other, and this was one that definitely makes it to the top class films made in India ever.

I actually did not want this post to look like one film review.....but I really could not help it..thats how much impact the movie had on me..It simply conveyed that even in the most toughest of situations there is space for a smile and a laugh....Bottomline: There is light at the end of the tunnel

Where are we heading???

Just beacuse my last post was based on cricket, dont even think that this too is gonna be about our future in cricket. This is an entirely different story. APJ's dream of 2020!!With the way thinks turning out these days , I seriously got the feeling that dreams wont come true!!!Hope am wrong!!I am an eternal optimist but the reason i have been pushed into this frame of mind is solely dedicated to one program i saw in TV sometime back. This was about something called Gigolo and from then on am in shock.

I really can c everyone searching a dictionary for this word.I did not know the meaning too but thanks to the channel that i have learnt the meaning.

Gigolos?????????They simply mean " A man who has a continuing sexual relationship with and receives financial support from a woman" or simply a male hooker. We have always heard a million stories about the 'male lust' but it came out as a surprise atleast when i saw this show.

It was a show simply indicating the rise in the number of the gigolos.A constant rise i guess. Pathetic! We have always been criticising the attitude of the males, but with this sudden info don't know who to criticise...The guy who makes a profession out of it or the Indian women searching for the pleasure(i feel wretched even typing this)?????????????

What does it mean to be a gigolo? “Just fun loving people who want to enjoy their life can do anything until and unless it doesn't harm anyone!" This was the statement. Am actually surprised with the niche they have carved out for themselves. We don't want to see a customer base for this do we?

The Indian women has often been portrayed to be the epitome of love, affection and what not and all of a sudden some news. Besides ,another new career oppurtunity for our youngsters!!!!!!!!!!!!God save everyone!!!

The last few years has seen a massive change in cultural trends ,with many Indians liking to imitate the people in the west. Its an irony that this is happening at a time when people in the west have started realizing the importance of family, love and togetherness that we Indians have been professing for long. The people who haven't been able to accept such cultural changes have been pointed to be having a taboo!!!Taboo???????Simply resisting something thats just not suitable for this country is not lack of broad mindedness!!!!!Am sure many of us would agree that this is not what we wanted to see!!!

With Apj's deadline for his 2020 dream nearing, we simply are getting from bad to worse!Improvement on the economic front has been what v have been targetting for sometime but simply ignoring our values and customs , is just not right! With every dawn i just hope we better in everything not just economy!!!!!!!!

The funny game called cricket

Seems like this title is a bit misplaced ,considering what is happening to Indian cricket. I have loved the sport what so ever and could not stop myself from expressing my love for the game(obviously the players too). With two major events involving every test nation being held in a span of a year should have been a cricketing fiest, but as things stand now nothing seems to go right when it comes to cricket.

The Champions Trophy got a blistering start(the wrong word...but) with a doping scandal leading to two of the deadliest bowlers(one can claim Asif n shoaib to be deadly considering the spite of bowlers these days!!!!) simply getting out of the tournament. The finals was a even bigger surprise with WI qualifying(I loved it though!!!!!) and clashing heads with mighty Aus.

With numerous countdowns(every channel had one countdown) day in and day out counting days for the mega event things looked a bit bright.A million programs dedicated to cricket, the legends who might retire and a zillion previews to the world cup which was months away. Everyone forseeing the winner, with some channels going to the extent of calling tarot card readers !!!!!!!!!!!Numerous ads , numerous wishes and the prayers of a billion and all our deadliest batting line up could do was to lose against our dear neighbors Bangladesh!!!!We just followed out neighbors on the other side, on their way back home(OH!!!!!!!!v have so many similarities!y at all do v fight??).

An even bigger event this time ,completely overshadowing the mega event itself, a murder!!!The killing of BOB WOOLMER. We still don't know what the motive was but match fixing???????????A possibility? With the large amoungts of money involved nothing can just be said. Our dear cricketers return back home and they visualise a scene they never would have thought of!!Angry fans, who would have expected this???Three modern giants with an aggregate run score that almost equals the entire Aussie run score...and we still return home just too early. Its time to introspect says the Indian Captain...ya it definitely is.

Every citizen wants the BCCI selection process to be transparent!!But with almost everyone in the country having a view of what should be done, transparency looks a distant possibility. The increased media speculation about the world cup was all that aroused our interest in the world cup. They were the ones who made an extraordinary Sachin God,made a solid Rahul the wall and made the mesmerising Sourav The prince!!!Tarot card reading of who would win a toss and who would figure in the eleven(u should ask that to the captain not the tarot card reader!!!!!!!!) all these hype and all of a sudden these greats find themselves in the dark. The way they had served the game of cricket could be matched by none but themselves and all of a sudden they find themselves in the same league as a Dhoni, a relatively new guy!!!!!!

These were the players who we have always been proud of, who we have been worshiping as demi gods and all of a sudden their effigies burnt???????These players are all blessed but it was the media and the public who made them God. It was our cricket crazy nation that enabled them to earn the money they do now.True that they did not meet our expectations but a win and a loss are all part of the game. None but the players would have faced the plight for the dismal loses. If we stop making a Gilchrist out of a Dhoni, if we stop getting frenzy for a win against a non test playing nation,if we could stop making our talented cricketers God's, if we could watch cricket as a sport we could find ourselves winning more matches(atleast there s no pressure then) and above all our cricketers will find themselves playing the domestic season than endorsing a product.

Every one needs space. It was us who made the sport a religion.Just leave them alone for sometime and we could see ourselves winning. This is the time when we have to support our team. This is the time to re-build.I wish people understand that cricket is a sport that is very special to us!!!!!!!!!!!!1 Go India Go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nostalgia '07-Our farewell

Being the first post it does feel weird to start with a post about the farewell . But anything at the heat of the moment is what that reaches everyone.Four long years in college. Did I say long??That is what i felt when I was about to step into college. People say life in school is one of the most innocent periods you would have.Very true! But college? How was that going to be?Too many new faces!!How would we leave our mark?Or atleast have our presence felt? This would have been everyone's thought on their first day of coll.Isn't it???I felt so.

Four years , and now i don't feel they were long.Too short a time to have known the numerous faces.Too short a time to learn about your mates and too short a time spent with them.Too short a time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I would like to steal some more time 4m anywhere to be here for just a bit longer.Too short they have been, but memorable too.

When did v get to know each of our mates so well????Our class hours, lunch sessions or was it one of those numerous Industiral Visits we had.One may never know!!But everyone did bond.Four years of joy, laughter, teasing, taunts, fights, sorrows!!!

The preparations for the symposium, the tour, the culturals and what not. Each of these involved its own set of clashes but the ultimate goal was to make everything a success and v did do that!!!Keeping our clashes apart v did work together when it was needed most. All happening and suddenly v are invited to our farewell!!!Did v finish 4 years???I still cant believe.

Farewell has always been one of those days where frens cry!!Did i c anyone cry??????????Guys v were having a blast.Singing, dancing and teasing. In fact many of us decided not to cry,but the moment came and i say many tears roll down the cheek of my frens. The presentation about our four years at college....an arena full of shouting, giggling and laughing students and suddenly everyone is dumbfolded. Were we reliving those moments ????or were we thinking of our future days when v would miss the campus, the teachers and above all our dear ones????.No one can say.But v did feel our hearts heavy at that moment.Didn't we???????

It will be a month before v really part ways but it will be with a heavy heart when we do so.We will step into a world that will be a lot mre ruthless, but am sure we will have our old set of frens to be by our side.Besides v will have a new set too!!!After all life is full of surprises and thats what makes it intersting too!!!
